NORTHANTS retained the Eversley Trophy – an inter-county competition at Newark for county executives, beating Suffolk on the last end of their four-match programme.

Following wins over Durham – who included several Derbyshire Trophy finalists – North Cambs and Hunts, Northants faced Suffolk needing a maximum six points – two for each winning rink and two for the overall.

Malcolm Squires, Richard Montgomery and Neil Wright won by three shots on their rink – playing a two-bowl triples format – leaving treasurer Les Sharp, fixture secretary Graham Agger and past president Cliff Watson needing victory to clinch the title for a second successive year.

And they duly did it on the last end after the rinks had been tied at 13-13. BW
