Parkway’s Adams and Duffy double

PARKWAY bowlers completed a Northants Bowling Federation cup double for the second year running when they defeated hosts Whittlesey Manor 49-47 in the final of the Adams Cup on Sunday.

Having already retained the Dan Duffy Trophy, Parkway came through over the closing ends to pip Whittlesey Manor in a repeat of last year’s final to keep possession of the Adams Cup.

After trailing for a considerable portion of the match, Parkway went into the last two ends with a one shot advantage at 48-47 – Tristan Morton’s rink having beaten Martin Welsford’s 17-11.

There was a ‘no-scoring’ final end on one of the other rinks, where Pat Reynolds’ edged home 19-18 against Peter Brown, who had ditched the jack when two shots down, which meant that Jeff Newson, holding shot on the remaining rink, didn’t have to deliver his last bowl, and so accepted a 13-18 defeat at the hands of Mick Duell.

Parkway complete Duffy double (picture special)

Parkway bowlers ahead of their Dan Duffy Trophy triumph

Blackstones bowlers – unable to repeat their performance two years ago.

PARKWAY bowlers will again represent the Northants Federation in the Durham Centenary Inter-county club team championship in 2019 after defeating Blackstones in the Dan Duffy Trophy final at Whittlesey Manor on Thursday (July 28).

Having lost a week earlier in the Durham Centenary southern section final to the Hunts champions (White Hart, Warboys), Parkway were in no mood to let their grip loosen on a chance for revenge against their old rivals next year.

And so it transpired that Blackstones, who are brushing all aside in local leagues, took the brunt of the Parkway bowlers’ determination under captain Trevor Collins, whose rink of Howard Shipp and Tony Scarr soon had Stephen Harris, Paul Bailey and Paul Buckley under pressure with nine shots without reply at five ends.

On an adjoining rink Paul Dalliday, Fred Addy and Simon Law also took command at the halfway mark of their scheduled 25-end clash with Wayne Morris, Mark Pye and Blackstones captain Jonathan Earl, scoring three four counts in quick succession, leaving the other two Parkway rinks merely to hold their own to see out victory.

Blackstones finally conceded with still seven ends to play and 30 shots adrift.

Results (Parkway names first):

Parkway lose in Durham Centenary clash

Parkway bowlers have missed out on the chance to represent Northants Bowling Federation in next month’s Durham Centenary Trophy final at Skegness.

They were beaten 98-72 at home by defending champions White Hart BC! Warboys in the final of the southern section on Sunday.

Rinks were shared at two apiece, but the Hunts bowlers, who raced into an early advantage, were never seriously threatened in the 25-end decider. The successful Parkway rinks of Mike Robertson and Simon Law only got the better of their opponents over the last few ends.

RESULT (Parkway names first):
Parkway 72, Warboys 98.Paul Dalliday, James Harford, Simon Law 24, Ross Martin, Joe Randall, Rob Elmore 22;Brian Martin, Lee Welsford, Tristan Morton 10, Phil Swannell, Simon Leader, Ed Elmore 26;Stuart & Pat Reynolds, Mike Robertson 24, Steve Farrant, Tom Swannell, Lewis Baker 21; Neil Wright, Tony Scarr, Jeff Newson 14, Chloe Brett, Richard Stevens, Nicky Brett 29.

Northants finals results

Tony and Rita Mace (right) won the senior mixed pairs. They are pictured with Fred and Fiona Richardson, whom they beat in the final. See more images below.

NORTHANTS Federation president Tony Mace and his wife Rita will represent the county in the national finals at Skegness next month after winning the senior mixed pairs in the county championships at their home club Whittlesey Manor on Sunday.

It was an appropriate conclusion to a day of blistering heat in which the Manor green was in outstanding shape thanks to the efforts of club members in recent weeks. The finals had been due to be staged there last season but the green had to be withdrawn because it was unfit.

As well as the Maces, the host club also won the champion of champions singles and the three bowl men’s triples, where Martin Welsford beat his son Lee in the final.

Other clubs to have three champions included Broadway (Yaxley), Ketton, Parkway, Blackstones and Langtoft.

County organisers are hopeful that at the Skegness finals (August 21-25) all winners will fulfil their commitments, despite the counter attraction of Bowls England finals at Leamington for which some have also qualified.

Helen Crow funeral date is set

Helen Crow is pictured in 2014 with Sarah Newson (left)and Pat Reynolds after winning the national rinks.

HELEN CROW, a multi Northants Women’s Bowling Federation champion and twice a winner of national rinks titles, has died after a long struggle with motor neurone disease. She was 67.

The Langtoft Pearl and Parkway Bowls Club member was a loyal supporter of her county along with her late husband Bob, who died in May 2016. And even after contracting her illness and being restricted to a wheelchair was a cheerful follower of county fortunes at the national finals in Skegness.

Formerly a receptionist with Finning (UK) Ltd in Peterborough, Helen’s greatest bowling achievements were alongside Sarah Newson and Julie Masters in winning the EWBF two-bowl triples in 1996 and with Pat Reynolds and Sarah taking the 3-bowl rinks title at Skegness in 2014.

The funeral will be held at Marholm Crematorium on Friday, August 3 at 12 noon.Flowers from close family only please; donations at the service for Motor Neurone Disease (MND).

Mourners requested to wear something purple or lilac.

SAD END TO NORTHANTS WOMEN’S SEASON

NORTHANTS women’s slender hopes of qualifying for the final stages of the Donald Steward inter county championships at Skegness next month were dashed by rivals Suffolk, who inflicted a 39-shot defeat at Peterborough & District BC’s green.

The visitors won on all but one rink, only the Conservative Club trio of Tina Tinklin, Liz Hext and Sheila Craig salvaging county pride.

Elsewhere the county’s Silver Jubilee Vase team ended a topsy-turvy season by conceding all 18 points at the City of Peterborough green on which Suffolk had more joy in taming.

Committed Northants score double win over Norfolk

With the distraction of England’s World Cup match with Sweden clashing with their Adams Trophy fixture against Norfolk, Northants Federation’s bowlers’ allegiance to country or county was always going to be tested.

And so it proved, particularly with the Adams team where, beleaguered captain Jonathan Earl was faced with late withdrawals from a match scheduled to take place at his home club an hour before the televised kick-off in Russia and then having to drop out himself to take his daughter to hospital with a broken arm!

However, three of his own Blackstones club players – Peter Linnell, Sam Downs and Dusty Miller – came to the rescue by stepping up and helping Northants to an outstanding 59-shot victory, claiming 20 of the 22 points at stake.

It was an impressive finish to a season that had promised so much at the start but flattered to deceive when victory at North Cambs was followed by defeats against Suffolk, Lincolnshire and Hunts.

To their credit Norfolk sportingly battled hard but with an ear to the nation’s fortunes in the background – a packed Blackstones social club watching England on TV just yards from the green – never came to terms with the heat and conditions which favoured the home side.

For Northants, Stephen Harris, Miller and Martyn Dolby took the rink honours with a 47-22 victory including three five-counts while Bob Warters, president Tony Mace and Mick Duell (earning his Adams flash badge for his sixth appearance) included a full house of six shots on the ninth end to transform an early deficit.

There were also wins for rinks skipped by Paul Buckley, Adam Warrington and John Holroyd.

Commented Earl: “I am really grateful to those who stepped up to play for me at late notice. The county needs commitment from its bowlers and that showed from all those who played.”

Results (Northants names only):

Adams Trophy (at Blackstones): Northants 203 (20pts) Norfolk 144 (2). S Roden, G Agger, M Welsford lost 27-32; M Humphreys, P Linnell, P Buckley won 32-21; H Shipp, P Bailey, A Warrington won 33-26; S Harris, D Miller, M Dolby won 47-22; W Morris, S Downs, J Holroyd won 34-21; B Warters, T Mace, M Duell won 30-22.

There were no such problem in terms of dedication and devotion to the Federation cause from the Northants Newton Trophy bowlers who rallied round to squeeze a five shot win against Norfolk at City of Peterborough BC, picking up 16-6 points win.

Only the new combination of Dave Corney, Mick Greaves and Brian Bassam – all from the Peterborough & District club – won convincingly over the punishing 31-end format (37-13) while Fred Richardson’s rink won by eight and Malcolm Squires by three.

For the rest it was a case of keep it tight to clinch the overall shots and points.

Commented captain Cliff Watson : ” The team performed well and gave me food for thought for next season. It was very competitive to the very last end. I commended the squad for their total commitment to the NBF and myself, including the attendance of the reserve.

Result (Northants names only):

Newton Trophy (at City of Peterborough BC) :Northants 163 (16) Norfolk 158 (6). Martin Stokes, Richard Allam and Malc Squires won 25-22; Dave Corney, Mick Greaves and Brian Bassam won37-13; Les Sharp, Zac Brown and Dick Noble lost 23-37; Peter Cox, Cliff Watson and Peter Jessop lost 23-30; Sean Fenlon, Jeff Clipston and Fred Richardson won 31-23; Fred Addy, Tony Kemp and Barry Lawrence lost 24-33.

Still hope for Northants women

Northants’ Donald Steward team pictured ahead of their win at North Cambs (Malcolm Squires)

ONLY MAXIMUM points from their final Donald Steward match at home to Suffolk next Wednesday (July 11) will give the Northants Federation women’s team any hope of reaching the inter county finals at Skegness in August.

And this despite an outstanding 14-4 points victory (126-118) over North Cambs on a bone hard March Town surface, which allegedly had received no watering throughout the season.

How much must they be regretting that 16-2 defeat at North Essex last month?

For much of the game Northants were trailing, but pulled back from 15 shots adrift to just three shots with five ends to play.

Much of the credit for the eventual eight-shot win must go to a great comeback by the Yaxley rink of Marlene Osbourne, Kathy Browning and Gill King who at one stage were thirteen shots down and fought back with four shots,on the last end to win by three.

Elsewhere Fiona Richardson, Carole Grief and Linda Darani took the rink honours 31-20.

Results (Northants names only):
Donald Steward Trophy ( at March): North Cambs 118 (4pts) Northants 126 (14). F. Richardson, C. Grief and Linda Darani won 31 – 20; T. Tinklin, J. Padley and Sheila Craig lost 18 – 23; N. Squires, D. Flowers and S. moir lost 23 – 26; E. Wallace, S. Suffling and C. Ford won 25 – 23; M. Osbourne, K. Browning and G. King won 29 – 26.

The Northants women’s teams for the matches against Suffolk on July 11 are as follows:

Donald Steward (at Peterborough & District): F Richardson, C Grief,L Darani; T Tinkilin, E Hext, S Craig; N Squires, D Flowers, S Moir; E Wallace, S Suffling, C Ford; M Osbourne, K Browning, G King. Res V Hatch, M Andrews.
