Still hope for Northants women

Northants’ Donald Steward team pictured ahead of their win at North Cambs (Malcolm Squires)

ONLY MAXIMUM points from their final Donald Steward match at home to Suffolk next Wednesday (July 11) will give the Northants Federation women’s team any hope of reaching the inter county finals at Skegness in August.

And this despite an outstanding 14-4 points victory (126-118) over North Cambs on a bone hard March Town surface, which allegedly had received no watering throughout the season.

How much must they be regretting that 16-2 defeat at North Essex last month?

For much of the game Northants were trailing, but pulled back from 15 shots adrift to just three shots with five ends to play.

Much of the credit for the eventual eight-shot win must go to a great comeback by the Yaxley rink of Marlene Osbourne, Kathy Browning and Gill King who at one stage were thirteen shots down and fought back with four shots,on the last end to win by three.

Elsewhere Fiona Richardson, Carole Grief and Linda Darani took the rink honours 31-20.

Results (Northants names only):
Donald Steward Trophy ( at March): North Cambs 118 (4pts) Northants 126 (14). F. Richardson, C. Grief and Linda Darani won 31 – 20; T. Tinklin, J. Padley and Sheila Craig lost 18 – 23; N. Squires, D.
