NATIONAL PRESIDENTS AT LUNCHEON

THE national presidents from the English Bowling Federation were the principal guests at the Northants Bowling Federation annual presentation luncheon held recently at the Orton Hall Hotel.

Northants Bowling Federation presidents Chris Ford and Dick Noble co-hosted the joint event and they assisted English Women’s Bowling Federation president Carole Swan and English Bowling Federation president Mick Rayson with the trophy presentations.

It was a successful year for the county with three national titles and they had no fewer than eight finalists at the outdoor championships in Skegness, although only two were converted into titles – Les Sharp and Gill King (Yaxley) in the senior mixed pairs and the Whittlesey Manor trio of Roger Stevens, Graham Agger and Steve Lander, who substituted for Martin Welsford in the final.

The other national title was achieved indoors when the county won the Derbyshire Trophy inter-county championship for only the third time.

These three trophies were presented again at the luncheon by the men’s national president, along with the Under 25 ‘Player of the Tournament’ award received at Skegness by Stephen Harris (Blackstones), who reached two finals and two semi-finals.

In fact, Stephen and his sister Louise, who was unable to attend the luncheon, claimed no fewer than ten county titles between them this year, including both the indoor and outdoor mixed pairs championships and their respective outdoor junior singles titles.

Louise also holds both pairs titles, one with Katie Bailey and the other with Helen Holroyd (Stamford), who also claimed a nap hand of trophies, including the indoor mixed triples with her mother and father, Moira and John.

There were special awards for the Derbyshire A and B teams, with Jeff Newson and Mick Linnell the first recepients, while Brian Martin and Norma Squires received the Adams and Newton Shields respectively.

To mark the 90th anniversary of the Northants Bowling Federation, national president Mick Rayson donated a new trophy for the outdoor mixed triples, won by Parkway’s Sophie Morton, Simon Law and Tristan Morton, the latter away on England duty in the European Championships.

There was also a new outdoor two-bowl singles trophy bearing the name of Forterra, which was purchased by the county in appreciation of the company’s on-going sponsorship agreement.
