NORTHANTS Federation president Tony Mace and his wife Rita will represent the county in the national finals at Skegness next month after winning the senior mixed pairs in the county championships at their home club Whittlesey Manor on Sunday.

It was an appropriate conclusion to a day of blistering heat in which the Manor green was in outstanding shape thanks to the efforts of club members in recent weeks. The finals had been due to be staged there last season but the green had to be withdrawn because it was unfit.

As well as the Maces, the host club also won the champion of champions singles and the three bowl men’s triples, where Martin Welsford beat his son Lee in the final.

Other clubs to have three champions included Broadway (Yaxley), Ketton, Parkway, Blackstones and Langtoft.

County organisers are hopeful that at the Skegness finals (August 21-25) all winners will fulfil their commitments, despite the counter attraction of Bowls England finals at Leamington for which some have also qualified.
