North Cambs no match for rampant Northants A

Bowlers from Stamford and Peterborough League outdoor clubs featured in Northants Federation A’s timely victory over North Cambs at Wisbech on Sunday.

It took time for the visitors to settle to the slower pace of carpet to that which they are used, but by the time 10 of the 25 ends of two-bowl triples had been completed, Northants had edged into a comfortable lead overall in a bid to secure the extra six points for the winning aggregate.

With Stephen Harris leading and Tony Scarr backing him at No.2, skip Martyn Dolby steered his trip to a 27-11 victory, which included 13 shots in seven ends from the 17th.

Roger Martin’s rink – with Mick Humphreys and Trevor Collins – also took command midway with 11 shots in six ends to pull back a 6-9 deficit and eventually run out 25-17 victors.

Brian Martin, Bob Warters and Jeff Newson completed the points haul after recording 12 shots in six ends midway then four more in the closing stages.

Simon Law’s rink were unlucky in a see-saw match and after taking a 17-16 lead dropped a crucial three on the penultimate end.

Sadly this is one of the last fixtures at the Wisbech complex which is due to close by the local authority at the end of the year to be replaced by a more lucrative gymnasium.
